Mike Helps – GSL 1982-2000

Date: 23rd May 2020 Author: Ingrid Hodges
It is with regret and deep sadness that we advise the passing on May 21st of Mike Helps, one of our former Group Scout Leaders.
Mike joined the Group as a cub and then ‘worked through’ Scouts, Senior Scouts and the Rover Crew. He very successfully ran the Venture Scout Unit for many years before becoming the Group’s GSL in 1982.  On his retirement as GSL Mike assumed the role of one of the Group’s honorary Vice Presidents. He was a member of the Group for over 60 years.
Another of our former GSL’s, Jonathan Long said;  ‘Mike was an inspirational leader in the Group, always active, ready with support and advice when needed and always incredibly hard working. He had a lively sense of humour and was good company.  Many young people at 1st Cheam will have benefitted from Mike’s involvement and for many of us his valued friendship.  Mike was a great Scout, through and through.’
Our deep condolences go to all of Mike’s family, with whom our thoughts are with at this difficult time.
Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
